Modern Foreign Languages: Spanish
Learning a language opens the door to new cultures, new experiences and new ways of understanding the world. Through learning Spanish, children develop confidence, curiosity and communication skills that will support them throughout their lives.
Our Vision for Spanish
At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share is at the heart of our language curriculum.
We want children to develop a love of languages and an appreciation of different cultures, traditions and ways of life. Learning Spanish helps children become confident communicators, broadens their understanding of the world and encourages respect for diversity.
Through language learning, children develop resilience, curiosity and the confidence to take risks. We want every child to leave Bathford with a positive attitude towards languages and the foundations needed to continue their language-learning journey beyond primary school.
What Do Children Learn?
We use the Language Angels programme to provide a progressive Spanish curriculum throughout Key Stage 2.
Children develop their skills in:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
- Vocabulary development
- Language learning strategies
Through a range of engaging topics, children learn to communicate about themselves, their interests, their community and the wider world.
As they move through Key Stage 2, children build upon prior learning and develop increasing confidence and accuracy in their use of Spanish.
How Do Children Learn?
Spanish is taught through engaging, interactive lessons which encourage children to listen, speak, read and write in the language.
Children learn through:
- Songs, games and conversation
- Speaking and pronunciation activities
- Reading and understanding simple texts
- Writing words, phrases and sentences
- Language investigation and problem-solving
- Exploring Spanish-speaking countries and cultures
Learning is carefully sequenced so that children revisit and build upon previously learned vocabulary and grammar. As their confidence grows, they are able to create longer spoken and written responses and communicate more independently.
In Key Stage 2, Spanish is taught as part of our mixed-age afternoon learning model. Learning is carefully planned to ensure progression across the key stage and to support all pupils in developing confidence as language learners.
Beyond Language Learning
Learning Spanish also helps children develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and communities around the world.
Children explore:
- Spanish-speaking countries
- Cultural traditions and celebrations
- Food, music and everyday life
- Similarities and differences between communities
These experiences help children develop respect, empathy and a broader understanding of the world around them.
What Will Children Take Away?
Through learning Spanish, children develop:
- Confidence in communicating in another language
- Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
- Curiosity about different cultures and traditions
- Memory and language-learning strategies
- Resilience and confidence when tackling new challenges
- An appreciation of the value of learning languages
We want our children to leave Bathford as enthusiastic language learners who are confident to communicate, curious about the wider world and ready to continue learning languages in the future.
