PE

Physical Education plays an important role in helping children develop healthy, active lifestyles. Through sport, physical activity, play and outdoor learning, children build confidence, resilience, teamwork and a positive attitude towards challenge.

Our Vision for Physical Education

At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share is at the heart of our Physical Education curriculum.

We believe that all children should have access to high-quality physical education that inspires them to enjoy being active and motivates them to achieve their personal best.

Through a wide range of physical activities, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead active and healthy lives. We encourage children to take risks, show determination, work collaboratively and celebrate both individual and team achievements.

Physical Education helps children develop not only physical competence, but also important life skills such as resilience, respect, leadership and teamwork.

What Do Children Learn?

We use the Get Set 4 PE curriculum to provide a progressive programme of learning from Reception to Year 6.

Children develop skills across a wide range of activities, including:

  • Fundamental movement skills
  • Team games
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Fitness
  • Yoga
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Swimming and water safety

As children move through the school, they build confidence, competence and resilience whilst developing the skills needed to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities.

How Do Children Learn?

Children receive at least two hours of high-quality Physical Education each week, alongside regular opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day.

Learning takes place through:

  • PE lessons taught by class teachers
  • Specialist coaching
  • Competitive and non-competitive activities
  • Team games and challenges
  • Outdoor learning opportunities
  • Sports festivals and competitions
  • Extra-curricular clubs

We work closely with Future Stars to enhance our PE provision and provide children with high-quality coaching across a range of sports and physical activities.

Children also benefit from opportunities to represent the school in competitions, festivals and sporting events with local schools.

Beyond the Curriculum

Physical activity extends well beyond PE lessons.

We are proud holders of the OPAL Platinum Award, recognising our commitment to high-quality play and outdoor activity.

Children enjoy:

  • Active playtimes and lunchtimes
  • Forest School experiences
  • Sports clubs
  • Community sporting events
  • Festivals and competitions
  • Dance and performance opportunities
  • Outdoor learning experiences

These experiences help children develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

What Skills and Values Do Children Develop?

Through Physical Education, children develop:

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Fundamental movement skills
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Resilience and determination
  • Physical fitness and wellbeing
  • An understanding of healthy lifestyles
  • A positive attitude towards challenge and achievement

By the time children leave Bathford, they will have the skills and confidence to participate in a wide range of physical activities and understand the importance of staying active throughout their lives.

We want our children to leave Bathford as active, confident and resilient individuals who enjoy physical activity, strive to achieve their personal best and are motivated to lead healthy lifestyles.
