Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
PSHE and RSHE help children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy, happy and responsible lives. Through this learning, children develop confidence, resilience, empathy and respect for themselves and others. The curriculum supports children to understand themselves, build positive relationships and prepare for the opportunities and challenges of life in modern Britain.
Our Vision for PSHE and RSHE
At Bathford Church School, our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share is at the heart of our PSHE and RSHE curriculum.
We want children to grow into confident, thoughtful and compassionate individuals who understand their own value and the value of others. Through our curriculum, children learn how to keep themselves safe, build positive relationships, care for their physical and mental wellbeing and become active, responsible members of society.
Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum reflects our Christian values whilst recognising and celebrating the diversity of the world around us. Children are encouraged to ask questions, reflect on their experiences and develop the confidence to make informed and responsible choices.
What Do Children Learn?
We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme, which provides a carefully planned and progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6. The six themes explored each year are:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
Through these themes, children learn about:
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing
- Healthy lifestyles
- Friendships and relationships
- Respect, kindness and inclusion
- Online safety
- Personal safety
- Citizenship and democracy
- Diversity and equality
- Growing up and change
- Physical and emotional health
Children revisit key ideas throughout their time at school, building their knowledge and understanding year by year.
How Do Children Learn?
PSHE and RSHE are taught through dedicated lessons, discussion, reflection and real-life contexts.
Children are encouraged to:
- Share their views respectfully
- Listen to different perspectives
- Reflect on their own experiences
- Develop confidence and resilience
- Practise decision-making and problem-solving
- Learn how to seek help and support when needed
In Key Stage 2, PSHE and RSHE are taught as part of our mixed-age afternoon learning model, providing opportunities for children to learn alongside peers from different year groups and engage in thoughtful discussion and collaboration.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education
Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory parts of the primary curriculum. At Bathford Church School, children learn about:
- Families and people who care for them
- Caring friendships
- Respectful relationships
- Online relationships and online safety
- Being safe
- Mental wellbeing
- Physical health and fitness
- Healthy eating
- Drugs, alcohol, tobacco and vaping awareness
- Health protection and prevention
- Basic first aid
- Growing and changing bodies, including puberty
These areas are taught in an age-appropriate way through the Jigsaw programme and are carefully planned to meet statutory requirements.
We work closely with parents and carers and recognise the important role families play in supporting children's personal development.
What Will Children Take Away?
Through PSHE and RSHE, children develop:
- Confidence and self-awareness
- Positive mental wellbeing
- Healthy relationship skills
- Respect for themselves and others
- Resilience and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge to keep themselves safe
- An appreciation of diversity and inclusion
- The skills needed to become responsible and active citizens
We want our children to leave Bathford as confident, caring and responsible young people who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.
